Oil Red O is a fat-soluble dye that is a strong lipid solvent and lipid staining agent that specifically stains neutral triglycerides, lipids, and lipoproteins within tissues and cells. When tissue sections are placed in the staining solution, the dye leaves the solution and dissolves in the lipids (e.g., lipid droplets) within the tissue, causing the lipid droplets within the tissue to appear red. It is used to analyze the lipid status of cell samples. Oil red O staining, because of its better observability and deeper staining, has now widely replaced other lipid staining methods, such as Sudan III, staining method.
