Todd hewitt broth is used for cultivation of haemolytic streptococci for different serological tests. In epidemiologic research of pathogenic bacteria including group A streptococci, this medium has been suggested as an alternate kind. Because it contains infusions of beef heart and peptic digest of animal tissue, Todd Hewitt Broth medium is highly nutritious. Haemolysin production is stimulated by dextrose. Sodium carbonate and phosphate provide a good buffer to the medium, balancing the acid generated during the fermentation of dextrose. This limits the haemolysin's antigenic streptococcal destruction. When growing streptococci before serological typing, Todd Hewitt Broth can be used in place of serum broth or horse flesh digest broth.
