A Hawley retainer is a type of orthodontic retainer that is commonly used to keep front teeth aligned after removing braces. It is made of a hard acrylic resin that fits over the upper jaw and a metal wire that fits over the front of the patient's teeth to prevent tooth movement.
Our standard Hawley retainers consist of a lip bow made of steel wire and a set of snaps for retention. There are four different types of snaps available, ball, C, arrowhead or Adams snaps. The customization process is as follows:
1. Wire Bending
The technician carefully adjusts the labial archwire from cusp to cusp using a U-ring mounted on the cusp. The technician will then install the cusp tabs and snaps.
2. Place Separator
After successfully adjusting the steel wire, the technician removes it from the model and covers the model with spacers.
3. Waxing the Wires
The technician places the lip bow back on the model and places hot wax on the lip to hold the bow in place then uses the hot wax to secure the ball clasp and repeats the process.
4. Putting the Model in Water
Immerse the model in water to prevent air bubbles from forming during acrylic addition and pressurization.
5. Add Acrylic
Add acrylic polymer in layers to build to the desired size.
6. Pressure Curing
Pressure curing to ensure that the acrylic is fully cured.
7. Trimming & Polishing
The Hawley retainer is removed from the model and the excess acrylic resin and any sharp edges is removed that may irritate or damage the oral tissues are eliminated in order to fit it perfectly around the patient's teeth. The final pass is to polish all surfaces of the Hawley retainer.
